Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues, including discs, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves and the brain. It does not use ionizing radiation.
How it relates to car accident recovery
Many accident injuries involve soft tissue that does not show on a standard X-ray. When symptoms persist or a provider suspects a disc, ligament or nerve problem, an MRI can provide the detail needed for an accurate diagnosis.
What to expect
- Screening questions about metal implants and devices
- Lying still on a table while images are taken
- A scan that commonly takes from about 20 minutes to an hour
- A radiologist's report sent to your treating provider
Good to know
Tell the imaging center about pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, pregnancy or claustrophobia before your appointment.
